K10D and Landscape Photography

This is my second set of photographs with the K10D.  This time out my objective was to see how the camera performs with landscape photography.  In my opinion, landscapes are a challenge for imaging sensors.  For example, imaging tall grass or tree branches required sharp detail from both the lens and sensor.  There is also the effect of aliasing on the picture and if the camera's sensor processing provides for anti-aliasing image correction, or not.

Another factor to consider is the lack of color and how the camera will image only slight 'tonal' changes in this pastel-like color palate for the environment being photographed.

The photos below are out of the camera with no post editing. Overall, the pictures are acceptable, but close inspection shows noticeable chromatic noise (sky predominately).  The tall grasses and tree branches tend to seem soft with noticeable smearing-effect when zoomed-in 300-400%.

Keep in mind the images are very good considering 2006 digital sensor and camera technology.

The photo above is a 300% enlargement.  Notice how this image is soft with noticeable smearing-effect when zoomed-in 300-400%


The photograph below shows the camera struggling with dynamic range as there seems to be blown-out area in the sky areas of the photograph.. 



Below is a 300X enlargement of the photo above.  I wanted to see the level of noise in the sensor.  There is apparent chromatic noise in the close up below.

First Photographs

On my fist time out with this Pentax K10D, I used the Pentax 18-55mm kit lens off my Pentax KS1. I just wanted to get out there and take some shots to see what the camera could do.   Of course the first time using any new camera system without any instruction I had to fumble my way through, but it wasn't too difficult since I have experience with both Pentax and other digital camera systems. I was really curious about how the imaging would look with the 10MP CCD sensor.  The results for me on this first go-around seem to show that the CCD sensor produces nicely saturated colors and less sharpness in this case due to the camera's image processing engine.  Less sharpness can be good when you want a 'creamier' look to your image.
